The Plant – Date Palm

Date knowledge

Date knowledge

The date palm bears the scientific name Phoenix and is found primarily in dry and warm regions of the world. It can be found in Africa, as well as in southern Europe and the Middle and Near East, but also in many parts of Asia.

In many regions, the date palm is part of the culture and traditional craftsmanship, which is why the knowledge, traditions, and customs surrounding the date palm were included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2022 across 15 countries.

The date palm not only provides its fruits, but the leaves, fronds, and fibers of the palm are also used in many regions of the world for traditional crafts and spiritual rituals.

The Fruit - Date

The date harvest usually begins between August and October and can continue throughout the year, as dates can be harvested at various stages of ripeness. The fruit dries naturally while still hanging on the palm. Due to their high natural sugar content, dates have a long shelf life.

Dates can be purchased either fresh or dried. Dried dates are dehydrated immediately after harvest and thus have a longer shelf life than fresh dates.

We sell exclusively fresh dates.

The rich, caramel-like flavor and soft, chewy flesh of dates are delightful on the tongue and extremely beneficial for the body. From relieving digestive issues to providing heart-protecting nutrients that lower blood pressure and cholesterol – dates offer numerous health benefits.

How to Best Store Dates?

Dates can be stored at room temperature, in the refrigerator, or in the freezer, depending on the storage duration and degree of dryness.

Fresh Dates

If you consume fresh dates within a few days, you can store them at room temperature.

For longer storage, you should keep them airtight in the refrigerator (at 2 to 8 °C). Ideally, if you have a cooler meat compartment in your refrigerator, you should place them there.

In the refrigerator, the dates stay fresh for about 1 month; after that, they might lose some flavor but are still edible.

Fresh dates can be stored in the freezer (at -18 °C) for up to 12 months.

Dried Dates

Dried dates can usually be purchased in resealable packaging.

When stored airtight, cool, and dry, they can last up to 16 months.

Through the drying process, the dates become drier and lose some aroma compared to fresh dates.

Benefits of Regular Date Consumption

The following are the main benefits associated with the regular consumption of dates, based on well-founded international scientific studies.

Significant energy boost

Revitalizes and improves endurance

Nourishes the nervous system

Strengthens eyesight

Increases the number of red blood cells

Fat-free and cholesterol-free

Improves the digestive system

Healthy bone development
